Earl Preston, and with choirs led by William Appling; formed own soul, R & B singing group, The Caspians; won various singing contests, at this time also acting, his Drama Class teacher was Alvin Rashkow. Also at this time he was an amateur boxer for six and a half years, trained by Tiger Fann and managed by Elijah Wheeler. In Cleveland he also studied voice with John O. Samuels, Gretchen Garnet, and with Gordon Almstead at OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY where he received his Bachelor of Music Degree. Later he attended the JUILLIARD SCHOOL OF MUSIC in New York studying with Sergius Kagen; Benno Frank at the KARAMU LYRIC THEATER in Cleveland and with Boris Goldovsky at TANGLEWOOD. In Europe he also studied with Maestro Luigi Ricci of the ROME OPERA HOUSE, and with Profs. Harry Gottschalk, Herbert Brauer and Max Lorenz in Germany. He was recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Opera Voice Scholarship, Munich.For many years Cullen Maiden was a member of Walter Felsenstein's ensemble at the KOMISCHE OPER, Berlin. In the Komische Oper production of "Porgy and Bess" under the direction of Prof. Goetz Friedrich, Cullen Maiden was a Porgy highly praised by critics and audiences all over the world, Der Morgen, Berlin, said about his performance: "...The most perfect and most moving performance of the season in the Komische Oper was Cullen Maiden's Porgy, full of strength and inner grandeur...Maiden was the artistic event of the Premiere:..." He appeared also in concerts with the great European orchestras, e.g. the LEIPZIGER GEWANDHAUS ORCHESTER with Kurt Masur, and in solo recitals, radio and television; stage, film and television appearances as an actor.
